25 Synthesis Essay Peer Review Assignment Guidelines
Introduction, Descriptions of Each Text, and Thesis
- What works well about the writer’s presentation of the synthesis question that connects the visual and/or written texts under examination? How could the writer better show this question’s significance and problematic nature?
- Has the writer chosen two different modalities to synthesize? (a piece of art + a song, or an ad + a poem, etc.)
- Where could the writer’s descriptions of the works be expanded, condensed, or clarified?
- Identify the thesis. How could the thesis be made more focused, risky, and clear in setting up the writer’s analytical and synthesis points? Did the writer use the template to map out their paper?
TEMPLATE: Although [Source A] and [Source B] both _______ [identify a commonality between the texts by considering how they both address your topic for community change], [Source A] sees _________ whereas [Source B] __________ [identify where the texts differ from each other, how they support each other, or how one text builds upon the ideas of the other]. Analytical Section of the Essay
- How could the analytical points more clearly compare and contrast each work’s values, assumptions, angles of vision, or rhetorical strategies in addressing the synthesis question?
- What further evidence could the writer add to develop these analytical points and make them more interesting and comprehensive?
Synthesis Section of the Essay
- How could the writer’s synthesis points more clearly demonstrate the writer’s thoughtful interaction with these works?
- What examples or other specifics could the writer include to develop these synthesis points more effectively?
- How could the writer conclude the essay more effectively to leave readers with a new perspective on the texts and on the underlying question?
Style/Mechanics
- Is the writer’s voice apparent? Is it consistent throughout the paper?
- Are there slang or colloquial expressions to be corrected?
- Is there variety in sentence structure?
- Are the sentences clear and do they flow smoothly?
- The paper’s punctuation, spelling, and capitalization should be correct. Are there errors that distract? What suggestions can you offer the writer?
Other Requirements:
- Does the writer cite both works on a Works Cited page?
- Is the essay at least 750-1000 words?
