Multimodal Narritive Slide Show

The community I chose to talk about is the community of the LC (Lewis- Clark) Valley. It is a very beautiful place to grow up; we get all four seasons and you also have access to the river and many other beautiful places, as well as the levi, where you can walk by the river . It is the only place I have been able to call home. I am the first person in my family to be able to say that Lewiston is my hometown, although my parents were born up on the prairie. I am aiming to show you the community we have here through Logos, Ethos and Pathos.

The history of LC Valley is described in slides 2 and 3, I show facts about how the LC Valley was founded and why. I also talk about my background here in the LC Valley. In talking about the history of the valley I hope to appeal to logos. In short, the LC Valley was formed because of the Gold Rush that occurred in Pierce, Idaho in 1960. People came here to find gold. Many of the people who came here for gold were actually Asian. They heard about the money and came running. They wouldn’t live in the town due to them not being citizens of the United States so would live along the Snake River behind the rocks in little huts. If you go up river on a Snake River Adventures tour,  you might find some of the huts they used to live in, although there aren’t many anymore there are still a few. With all the history in the valley I think our town has done a pretty good job at preserving our history.  My family has lived here since the 90s,  but all of us live around the LC Valley. On my dad’s side they have lived many different places, but they mostly lived in the plains of Anatone, Washington. My ethos is gained through the experience and history of my family’s life in the lewis-clark valley. I realize that some viewers might not respect the thoughts of a transplant to the same degree as a LC native. On my mom’s side of the family they all live on the camas prairie, so my parents grew up around here and had to come to Lewiston and Clarkston many times in their life for things like groceries and hay, many different things. They decided to come and live here because my mom was going to go to LCSC for college. My dad came down here a year earlier than her so they could set up a house and find stability. What made them stay here was they had good schools for their future children. For these slides I used stories and pictures to show the community as a whole. I used the helicopter photo because although you can’t see it in the picture the helicopter was putting out a fire, you can see the bucket attached to it. It also shows the town from a different point of view not many see right away and a bonus is this appeal to pathos.

In slide 4, I talked about the purpose of the Valley. I am a credible source becauseof my lifelong experience within the Lewis-Clark Valley. A big attraction to the lc valley is fishing.People from all over will come here for fishing, you see them especially during steelhead season all over the rivers, if you look at the river during this time you will see them almost side to side lined up . There are also many different wineries here because the weather is good for growing grapes. Although it’s not in this slide one other purpose could have been for the gold, during the gold rush. These are just some of the many different purposes of the LC Valley. I chose this picture that relates to the fishing aspect of our town and shows how beautiful our town can be.

In slides 5 and 6, I talked about the characteristics of the LC Valley both Physical and Personality characteristics. I also discussed the values the Valley has given most everyone who lives here. For me you can see it in most everyone you talk to throughout the town. One thing I have come to realize while living here is that LC Valley, although a decent size or what some would consider big, is actually really small. I feel like you can go anywhere and you will see someone you know and is relatively safe. I talk about how we have milder weather than some places. We are right at the confluence. LC Valley is a great place to retire. We are also a college town. Some values we have that I think are important, we are very neighborly. As I mentioned in a previous paragraph, we respect our history here such as, building on main street, native american history, as well as Lewis and Clark traveling through here thus being the towns being named after them. Every kid is taught that in fourth grade and that’s something in itself. One thing I love about the valley is you can always find a place that has live music, I think this shows we really value our music. I think we also value art here, they have many different things to do involving it ,but one in particular is theater, although this can be seen throughout the community, I noticed it a lot through our high school. When the new Lewiston High School was built, although it was very expensive, we specifically put a lot of money into the theater that is in the school.  For these slides I showed this picture because I think it shows a town you can trust, you are safe and you can be apart of this community, although the town isn’t shown in the picture to me you can see the beauties of the town and this is a spot that is quiet, safe kind of hidden away where you can go to think or do anything you want really. Although the docs are no longer there it is still peaceful and gives you a homey feeling.

In slides 7 and 8, I go into a little bit of detail about why I enjoy it. I enjoy the valley because it isn’t that far away from things to do or from my family even. I also enjoy it because although we are bombarded with festivals or concerts most still show up and support. One specific thing I said was football games but it is much more than that. We also have things like Hot August Nights is our town celebration,  if you go on main street you will see many different people through the weekend. You go to the rodeo and you are guaranteed to see someone you know, if not multiple people. When the Dogwood Festival comes around although it’s not as popular as some events but still pretty popular and you will definitely see someone you know.I like the valley because although it is bigger, it feels small once you get to know the community. I chose these because it shows different aspects of Lewiston, the inclusion in town events. I chose the sky picture because I think it really shows there is more to the valley than what meets the eye.

In my final two slides I address a problem in the valley and how to fix it. The problem I think we have the most is although I did mention events in the previous paragraph, there isn’t  much to do. I explain this with much emotion because this is a very passionate topic for me. What I mean by that is we don’t have many stores, we don’t have a lot of events. I know this is a problem for all ages but I feel it is more of a problem for teens, we aren’t at the age where we could go to a bar or get into some places and events or for some we can’t be in sports anymore, so what do we do? Well for some they drink or party a lot, for others they stay at home and don’t socialize, of course there are the kids that are in between but I feel like these are prime examples. How I think we can fix it is by having more things to do in the town. Something that would be fun for everyone. We do have many but I feel we need something for most weekends, or maybe even more in the winter time when people don’t have much to do. I don’t know how we would do that, maybe have people vote or just host events and see which ones are hits. I have noticed the last couple of years we are starting to get a little bit more stuff but it needs to be advertised more for people to know it’s happening because word doesn’t always spread as wide as we would like. I also think we need more stores, which we are getting more of but we need to keep heading in that direction. I chose these photos to show a message that although there isn’t much here there are still some things, you just learn to have more hobbies, which is a good thing, you can’t always rely on others to make your fun, you won’t ever be truly happy then.

Although the Valley doesn’t have a lot of big draws here, it is home. The aim of this essay is to educate and show the community we have here in the LC Valley through Logos, Ethos and Pathos.  Most people think that it can be boring, which it can, but once you’re here you can make a life. You learn how to adapt and find fun things to do. In my family it’s fishing, hunting, driving around, and many more.
